Pulled over
In an emergency, call 911 first.
First
Pull over to the right in a safe spot and turn on your hazard lights.
What to do
- 1Pull over to the right as soon as it is safe. Turn on your hazard lights.
- 2Turn off the car. At night, turn on the light inside the car.
- 3Keep your hands on the wheel where the officer can see them.
- 4Stay in the car unless the officer asks you to get out.
- 5When asked, show your license and proof of insurance.
- 6Tell the officer before you reach for anything. Say where it is.
- 7Be calm and polite, even if you think the stop is wrong.
- 8You can stay quiet. You can say, "I would rather not answer questions."
- 9If the officer asks to search your car, you can say no. Say, "I do not agree to a search."
- 10If you get a ticket, sign it. Signing only means you will show up. It does not mean you did it.
- 11When it seems over, you can ask, "Am I free to go?"
Do not
- Do not get out of the car unless you are told to.
- Do not argue or fight, even if the stop seems unfair. Fight it later in court.
- Do not run or drive away.
- Do not lie or hand over a fake ID.
- Do not reach under your seat until you tell the officer.
